Western opens up the season tonight at home.

Coach Redmond and the football team open up their 2021 season against district rival Monticello at home tonight. It will be a tough test for the Warrior defense as they try to stop Malachi Fields, who is an elite athlete and a UVA football signee.
Fields will put pressure on junior linebackers Carson Tujague and Dakota Howell with his ability to make plays on the ground and through the air. The last time they saw Fields was way back in September of 2019 when the Mustangs won a nailbiter 28-27.
Western’s offense will be led by senior running back Austin Shifflett. Shifflett has been at the focal point of the playcalling for the last two seasons, and this year will be no different. He has been named first-team all-district and all-region in the past and is once again a candidate for more honors.
The likely starter under center for Western is sophomore Hudson Toll, but junior Joey Burch might get some snaps at the position. Regardless of who is in the backfield, they will be protected by a talented offensive line anchored by junior Xander Smith.
