Model UN Starts Again

Model United Nations is a simulated diplomacy where students get to solve and tackle real world issues. MUN acts as a small scale of the real international group. Students who join this club receive the opportunity to educate themselves further about current topics affecting the world.

Model UN has risen dramatically in popularity this year due to the large influx of freshmen joining the club. As a result, the club members have to pick between two conferences to go to.

There was a conference at William and Mary in November and there is an upcoming one in February at Johns Hopkins. The conferences are busy with non-stop action.

Spencer Hale has been a member of Model UN since sixth grade and he remarks about the fun times he’s spent at conferences, “Students debate about current events and get to explore the city.”

Western Albemarle is hosting a middle school Model UN conference on March 21st with 200-300 students from all over Virginia. At this conference, there will be five different committees with three general assemblies that deal with broad ideas, a specialized conference, and a crisis conference.

The crisis committee will be Harry Potter themed, which means that the students will take on the personality of a character in the Order of the Phoenix.

Emma Gore is a long-term veteran of the ever-growing organization. Emma has been an avid member of Model UN since sixth grade. She has earned one the secretary general roles in the club.

Emma feels passionate about what the over-35 group thinks of our generation possibly ruining the world while consumed with our smart phones.

She says, “I feel that MUN is a concrete thing to show to others that you are wrong because we do care about the world and everything around us. We are the most educated generation in human history.”
