Lacrosse Wrap-Up

Varsity lacrosse teams continue into regional play.

With a new coach, this season has been an adjustment for not just the freshman, but everyone on the varsity girls lacrosse team. The varsity team has a large roster including a whopping seven freshmen. Despite having such a young team, the Warriors have dominated the district and have won all of their conference games. In spite of the cold, rainy weather on April 29, the Western girls’ varsity team crushed Fluvanna, 15-1. On the 30th, when the weather was unfortunately bad again, the Warriors lost to St. Catherine’s, a private school team traveling from Richmond, in a non-conference game. Western started strong, and has had a successful start of season, which will hopefully carry through to the end.

The Western Albemarle boys varsity lacrosse team is boasting a strong season with an overall record of 7-4 and a solid record of 4-2 in the Jefferson District. The two district losses have both come at the hands of cross-town rival Albemarle High School as the Warriors fell to the Patriots 16-4 and 7-5. The Warriors have been led by senior Justin Haws, sophomore Luke Reilly and junior Sumner Corbett who have contributed eighteen, eighteen and sixteen goals respectively this season.

Senior Carson Franklin has been a key defensive player for the Warriors as he has collected 71 saves in the goal this season. Sophomore Jack Loffredo has also been a dominating force, winning 101 of his 165 faceoff attempts. The Warriors will be back in action this Friday as they host the Monticello Mustangs at 7 pm at Warrior Stadium. With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are hoping to finish strong and prepare themselves for post-season play beginning with the Conference 29 playoffs.
