After a three-year hiatus, Harry Styles is back with a highly anticipated album. “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” is Styles’ fourth studio album. Following his 2022 release of “Harry’s House,” Styles explores a completely new sound. By drawing inspiration from the NYC party scene and famous dance rock names like LCD Soundsystem, Styles has crafted his best release yet. The album itself is 42 minutes long and features 12 upbeat tracks.
Starting with my personal favorite from the album, “Dance No More.” This track has a funky and experimental disco-like sound to it. Through the vocals and synth bassline, Styles is able to craft the perfect chill dance anthem. By featuring back tracking voices shouting phrases like: “You gotta get your feet wet,” and “Respect your mother!” Styles brings a playful feel into the track. Even though there is no video for this song, I still think that it has the potential to be one of the big hits from the album. After hearing the song on SNL, his live performance further solidified the song’s quality and production.
Another notable pick would be “Pop.” This track has a more chaotic and intense vibe to it because of his usage of sharp synthesizers and electric guitar. Styles having an electric guitar riff is nothing new; they were heavily featured in his second album “Fine Line.” Even though this is not unfamiliar for him, “Pop” showcases the instrument in a unique and new way. By having lots of build up in the beginning, Styles brings back the riff for the song’s peak and matches it with effects on his vocals, making it sound otherworldly and enhanced.
“Coming Up Roses,” the softest and most emotional track on the album, really stood out to me. Even though Styles hasn’t confirmed what any of the songs are about, there is lots of speculation that this song is about his ex-relationship with actress Taylor Russell. This track stands out, as it is a very slow and cinematic listen. Using instruments like the piano and a full string section, Styles provides senses of romance and reflection.
The weakest track, and only skip on the album, would have to be “Are You Listening Yet?” In the beginning, the phrase “Have you got your tummy tickled?” told me everything I needed to know about this song. Compared to all the other songs, it just feels a bit cringy and repetitive. The lyrics, which are a little too quirky, are paired with just-okay instrumentals and an intense chorus. Overall, this song is nothing special and can be easily forgotten or skipped.
Style’s fourth studio album “Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally” exceeded my expectations and felt worth the wait. If you are already a fan, like me, then this album will be a very satisfying listen. Even if you’re not familiar with Styles’ work, but enjoy disco and pop music, then this album is still definitely worth a thought-out listen, as it is very well produced and upbeat. I am very excited to see what live performances of these songs will look like on his upcoming tour, and what other press he will be in for this new era. 4.5/5!
