This spring, the AVID class is taking a two-day field trip to three colleges in the area. To raise funds for the trip, the class hosted a walkathon on October 8th.
The walkathons have happened in the past, and are usually the biggest fundraiser of the year for their trip. The event raised about $1800, with more money still coming in. Money was donated through pledging, in which someone sponsors a person walking, and gives them an amount of money per lap they walk. “We did a 5k, which is 13 laps, […] you can get a pledge from a person for walking so many laps,” said Katherine Innes, the AVID teacher.
AVID is a 4-year application based program designed to help students succeed in high school and beyond. The class teaches students studying and organization skills to help them excel in their classes, and helps them through the college, job search, and application processes in the later years of the program.
During the trip, students will get to take a tour of each college campus, and have the chance to eat lunch and dinner in some of the dining halls as well. “We try to visit a variety of schools and have a mix of public and private, as well as one large school, one medium school, and one small school,” said Innes.
The goal of the trip is to give students the experience of being on a college campus, as well as help them decide what they want to get out of a college, and what size of school they prefer. “I hope that they can get more of a feel of what they want out of the school, and they have a chance to visit places that they may not get a chance to visit,” said Innes.
In order to pay for the field trip, the class has to fundraise for their class. Since they are not a set curriculum class, they don’t get a budget from the school. “Our goal is to raise about […] $4-5000,” said Innes.
AVID will be having multiple other fundraisers throughout the year to sponsor their trip, including selling t-shirts.
