Warriors Golf Dominates Conference Tournament
The Western Albemarle varsity golf team won the Conference 29 tournament on Monday, Sept. 30. Western, who had a total of 317 strokes, finished seven strokes ahead of the runner-up Monticello Mustangs, who had a 324. The teams who finished behind them, from best to worst, were: Fort Defiance, Spotswood High School, Waynesboro, Turner Ashby, Broadway and Stuarts Draft. Monticello and Western Albemarle were the only schools representing the Jefferson District.
Kyle Landis paved the way for the Warriors with a score of 74, good for best in the conference. Next was Hunter Weis with a 78, Jake Thompson with an 81, and Joe Squillace with an 84. WAHS crushed the competition. They finished 137 strokes ahead of last place Stuarts Draft.
With the critical win, the Warriors advance to play in the regional tournament on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at the Botetourt Golf and Swim Club. If Western can finish in first or second place of that tournament, they will advance to compete in the Virginia state championship.
