Varsity Field Hockey Wins Against Powhatan

The girls’ field hockey team at Western Albemarle is optimistic coming off of their last game, a 1-0 win against Powhatan High School.

“The last game showed improvement and really boosted our confidence, now we know we have the capability of scoring,” Reilly Funk, one of eight team captains, said. She is referring to the lack of goals the Warriors have scored in their two games before the one at Powhatan.

The goal scored at Powhatan marked the first goal of the season for the girls. With more than 20 shots on goal throughout the game, that one goal was a reward in itself. This season’s turn for the better is reflective of the strong team dynamic this year.

The captains “make it really great, they’re really enthusiastic and supportive,” said junior Ellie Allen. It is a different kind of team than last year’s, where many individual players had a lot of talent.

“The team is stronger together than we are individually,” said Funk.

The Warriors followed their victory against Powhatan with a tough loss to Collegiate Wednesday night. The game ended at 5-0.
