Inside Model Congress: Getting Heated
April 1, 2015
In the House, Republicans and Democrats were able to reach an agreement over the Chris Kyle bill giving veterans health coverage after they have served. Republican speaker, Carter Berry said, “this is the greatest country on earth because of our soldiers and we owe it to them.” It was a unanimous vote and veterans will now receive health coverage paid for by the Americans that they protected during their service.
The minimum wage bill was one of much more discussion. Evan Davis, of the Republicans threw out many numbers in the debate saying that, “a current full time minimum wage job will leave you above the Federal poverty line, and people who do not aspire to greater things than a minimum wage career do not deserve the same lifestyle as those who worked harder.” This was met with a lot of opposition from the other side of the room with the Democrats. The vote was so close that House Republicans had to yell “nay” in order to get the vote to go to a hand count where Democrats won on a small margin.
