On some of the close bills, it was not very obvious whether more hands were raised in favor of the bill or against it. It was up to the freshmen pages to count the hands, and therefore decide the bills. But what if they messed up?

According to Alex Moreno, a freshman page, he tallied up 50 votes against a bill on repealing ObamaCare. While his fellow page, Hannah Kearns, counted 57. Ultimately the count did not matter because there were 70 votes in favor of the bill. According to Moreno, “a few people in the back corner put their hands down right before I counted them. They must’ve changed their mind.” A seemingly stressful job that would be quite mentally taxing, the Freshmen Pages kept their cool and counted hands exceptionally well.
