In July of this year, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin issued Executive Order 33, requiring public schools to block student access to cell phones throughout the school day. WAHS will begin following an accordant phone policy when students return from break in January. Principal Jenn Sublette said that bell-to-bell at Western will likely look similar to existing practices. “Just put them in backpacks, that is what we plan to do. That’s what I want to take to the department chair,” she said. Most likely, students will simply be required to keep phones inside their backpacks at all times, similar to the existing “Away for the Day” policy at Henley. Teachers may also have the option to use phone pouches, but it will no longer be universal.
