This year’s girls varsity field hockey team has had an extremely successful season with wins all across the board. Despite being undefeated, the girls have dominated on and off the field showing spirit for their team. Senior player Skyler Powell has played a huge role in the girl’s season. Powell is a left forward, formerly a left midfielder, who started playing field hockey from the early ages of 10 to 11. Powell acknowledges that it is hard to manage school, social, and sports life but shares that, “I just prioritize what I want to do at that moment and save the rest for later.” Another thing about the girls varsity team that is so key to their success is the friendship and support the girls have for each other. The friendships on the team is Powell’s favorite part of being on the Western team.
Camille Love, is a sophomore center midfielder who picked up field hockey at the age of seven. Spirit and WAHS culture are both huge parts of Western, and that’s no exception for the varsity field hockey team, as it is Love’s favorite part of the team. “The culture of the team is so nice and everyone is so supportive.” Love affirms that keeping up on academic studies while being able to have a social life, is key. “I try to devote certain days of the week where we have morning practice to focus on schoolwork, but on the weekends, I try to hangout with my friends and not do as much work.” Having priorities and staying balanced are important for both athletes on this team.
