Sophomore defensive back and return man Robert Sims looks over at the bench

Going into Thursday night’s contest, local news sources like Scrimmageplay and The Daily Progress listed the storied matchup between Western Albemarle and Monticello at just about dead even. However, Western’s defense played exceptionally to hold the Mustangs to just seven points, and walked away with a 28-7 beat down of their Jefferson District rival.

On the first possession of the game, Sam Hearn marched down the field on his feet and capped off the opening drive with a rushing touchdown. Monticello didn’t even sniff the end zone until Western’s Derek Domecq fumbled the ball deep in the Warrior’s own territory. Monticello then took over, and executed with a Darian Bates rushing touchdown tying the game at seven a piece.

The stout Western defense did not give the Mustangs another point after that mid-2nd quarter score. Sam Hearn totaled 296 yards, out-gaining the entire Monticello roster, and had three of Western’s four touchdowns. One being a turning point in the game, when Hearn found Domecq on a slant route who then ran it to the house to go up 21-7.

Monticello’s quarterback, Kevin Jarrell, is probably having nightmares about the Crutchfield brothers. The defensive duo wreaked havoc all night long, and were a big part of the second half shutout. Senior Osiris Crutchfield recorded a blocked punt that resulted in Sam Hearn’s second rushing score of the night.
