Western Football falls to Monticello, 31-21

The varsity football team lost a hard-fought game against Monticello last Friday night. The Mustangs struck early in the first quarter, scoring on a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown. The Warriors responded quickly, driving the ball down the field in a series of run plays formulated by senior quarterback, Kent Henry. Using this momentum, Western tacked on another touchdown in the first half, and it was clear that this would be a close game. Halftime ended with the Warriors trailing 17-14.

The second half saw the Warriors, minus senior Nicolaas Drapanas, convert a series of first downs to take a 21-17 lead. It seemed that the momentum was in our favor as Henry intercepted the ball on Monticello’s next drive for a touchback. However, the tide quickly turned as Monticello’s Aaron Dudley would intercept the ball on the very next play. Dudley went on to pick the ball twice more in the fourth quarter, setting a school record. Converting on these interceptions, Monticello would add on two more touchdowns to win, 31-21.

The Warriors are now 6-1 on the season and will return to action this Friday taking on the Black Knights at Charlottesville High School. Kick-off is at 7:30.
